Bill Nye in Waco

Posted Apr 13th, 2006 at 7:19 am in Culture, Religion & Faith, Science

Last week, Bill Nye (The Science Guy) gave a talk at McLennan Community College in Waco, TX. Everything went well at first, until…

The Emmy-winning scientist angered a few audience members when he criticized literal interpretation of the biblical verse Genesis 1:16, which reads: “God made two great lights — the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars.”

He pointed out that the sun, the “greater light,” is but one of countless stars and that the “lesser light” is the moon, which really is not a light at all, rather a reflector of light.

A number of audience members left the room at that point, visibly angered by what some perceived as irreverence.

“We believe in a God!” exclaimed one woman as she left the room with three young children.

What’s funny to me is that people would get angry at this, when there are two creation stories. Genesis 1:1 - 2:3 is the first, and a new story begins in Genesis 2:4. In the second story, man is made before anything else, including women. This is in total conflict with the creation order given in the first account, and seems rather in conflict with Genesis 1:27 which, with a close literal interpretation implies that men and women were created at the same time.

You know, when I’m reading literature and I see two different stories back to back, I usually recognize a literary style other than literal history. But it seems that some, like the attendees to Nye’s lectures, wear their sensitivies on their sleeve, looking for their opportunity to cause a scene. Man, it’s embarrassing.

Nye’s website (warning, it’s the most annoying website ever, turn off your speakers or puncture your eardrums) opens with a flash animation of the evolution of man. Perhaps those audience members who got angry should have googled him first. Then they could have gotten angry at home.

  1. Mary Riedel opines:

I love Bill Nye! I remember watching him on PBS growing up, as well as in my eighth grade science class at Lincoln MS…good times.

  2. Kelley touches upon:

The Entomological Society of America releases a magazine (journal) type of publication every four months or so, and the most recent one that I receieved in my mailbox yesterday seemed to be entirely devoted to the topic of evolution and ID. A resolution was called for at the last national ESA meeting and, no surprise, they declared evolution to be the only current theory recognized in the field of entomology and the only theory to be taught in our insect-science classrooms.

Anyway, your post reminded me off one of the articles written in the issue that addressed people who hold to literal translations of the Bible, that those people often use the language “God’s eye wittness testimony to the creation story”. The author said that sort of language reminded her of a court room scene and she reflected on how wittness etc. must be sworn in with their hand on the Bible.

Well, the author asked the question, “Would God swear on the Bible?” We are told as Christians that the Bible is the infallible word of God, but written by fallible people. So, what do you think, would God swear on the Bible? The *whole* truth??

  3. Kelley, I think the analogy is a little silly, that God ina courtroom needs to swear to tell the truth.

Anybody that wishes to take every word as historical, scientific fact, thinking that the authors greatest concerns are with factual accuracy to the very last word, will have a very hard time indeed holding that stance. To do so is to view everything through a thoroughly Western lens — a lens that neither the writers, nor their intended audience shared. I think it’s one of the reasons Christians look so silly. They try to argue the sky isn’t blue.

Here’s one brief example that throws the idea of total, 100% factual emphasis out the window. Read Mathew’s account of the fig tree being cursed (Mathew 21:8) and compare it to account in Mark (beginning in 11:12). In the first, the fig tree immediately withers. In the second, the text emphasis that the disciples heard Jesus curse the tree, and that they went on their way. The next day, Peter notices the tree and makes a big deal of it and points it out.

What’s more reasonable? That the tree in Mark’s telling wasn’t noticed by any of the disciples when it happened? That everyone noticed it but Peter, who was off peeing in the bushes, but within earshot to hear Jesus curse the tree, and thus was surprised to see the tree when they came back? Unless someone wants to light a hoop on fire and repeatedly jump through it, this is a normal type of textual error that would be expected with multiple authors recounting a story years after it happened. I have no problem with that. It doesn’t upset me, it doesn’t shake my faith. In fact, I like it. It’s logical –something I’m often guilty of, I know.

  4. perianwyr utters:

God wouldn’t have to swear to tell the truth because he could automatically make everything he said true, as he said it.

  5. perianwyr utters:

And another thing, as a homosexual christian i must say that I find this appalling.

  6. Killface reflects:

^^^^^considering that most christians would find you Apauling too?

  7. Killface, you misspelled “appalling”. This wouldn’t be that big of a deal except that the post you were replying to included the correct spelling of the word.

I weep for the state of human intelligence.

  9. Just wanted to point out that the “two” Creation accounts in the book of Genesis are perfectly reconcilable if you consider them to be from two different perspectives (one from His and one from the surface of the earth, to horribly oversimplify), it’s actually a fascinating interplay…and the two accounts of the fig tree, much like the two accounts of a mother coming to ask Christ to heal her daughter which are commonly cited as contradictory for similar reasons, can be understood quite logically as being accounts of events concerning two different trees, and two different young women, in four separate instances.

Unless thinking similar things can happen more than once in one’s lifetime involves jumping through too many flaming hoops.

Deny any particular faith as passionately as you would like, but try to think things through a bit before making dogmatic statements about something you might not understand as well as you assume.

  10. If only more Americans from the state of Human Intelligence would move to the Republic of Texas. (There is a HI listed among the postal system’s list of states, isn’t there?)

But perhaps Killface meant “Apauling” in the sense of “negating the apostle Paul”, who seemed sometimes to use his correspondence with other church leaders to work on his own personal issues of racism, sexism, and homophobia. He got pretty far with the whole racism thing, you must admit, especially when you consider the culture he was raised in.

  11. It just occurred to me: you don’t capitalize “apolitical” or “asexual” because “politics” and “sex” are not proper nouns. I’m almost certain Killface spelled Apauling properly, now.

  12. I thought my Catholic School was bad! We at least learned our science from science texts! Holy Apes***!

  13. David touches upon:

I am from Waco, Texas, and I was actually present at the talk given at McLennan Community College, and I just want to point at that while there were some uneducated extremists, on the whole the community embraced the visit by Bill Nye, and that it is still talked about by some today. Don’t judge a community because of a few bad apples, while it is true that there are many fundamentalists in Waco, not everyone shares their closed-minded view.
And it was a great talk, he is even funnier in real-life than he is on his show.

  14. Arel the Episcopal observes:

Bill Nye! He’s great! With that crazy haircut and the rat for an assistant and all, especially that cute l’il lab chic… when he spells out the big words it really gets me going! Oh, wait… that’s Beekman’s World. Nevermind.

  15. Bill Nye has grown radical in his old age. I’ve grown very weary of hearing from him…always pumping his agenda. I suspect he had a sneer on his face when he said this. It would sure be nice if we could just respect each other’s differences. It’s fine to disagree. But you don’t have to rub people’s noses in it, no matter what you believe.

  16. What has happened to society, where science is booed and ignorance applauded?

  17. Jesusnmary remarks:

if you tallied up all the hours wasted in arguing, debating, flaming, and believing in religion, unicorns, and leprechauns, we could have cured real things in real life, such as cancer, our environmental woes, our failing political, social, judical, medical, military……..systems by now. Just think, for every hour spent posting absurd and irrelevant nonsense like this, one of you, or maybe three or 20 of you, could be say working on the next alternative energy source or revamping our mental health care mess. But, alas, I am sure to stumble across these worthless “conversations” based on lucky charms and voodoo. Religion is the biggest hoax of western civilization, and believing in it is a sickness for anyone old enough to realize that Santa isn’t and was never real. Show me a real miracle, then reproduce it in the flesh and i’ll eat my own shoes. Anyone? Anyone?

  18. democracysucks utters:

Simply put, Genesis 2 does not contradict Genesis 1 whatsoever. In fact, Genesis 2 says God formed Adam out of the soil. Please actually read the verses before you post such a blatantly false statement on your website.

  19. Jacqueline Rat;iff yaks:

Ignorance prevails again.I feel sorry for the children of these people that know no other way. That are actually raised to believe in intelligent design.Which by the way is anything but.I hope that reason and science will prevail in this argument.

We live in a sexually saturated society and yet there will be no sex education?Just abstinence. How retarded is that? That does not work. All it does isgive ignorant children no information when they experiment sexually. So there is an increased rate of teen pregnancy. Why you ask? Do you really have to ask that?

  20. Facts are certainly frightening to an unfortunately large group of people in this country. Hopefully Mr. Nye will be none the worse for the wear.

  21. tiffany reflects:

  22. marijn dares to say:

what !! this is in blatant disregard for Thor, a real god. Not your whiny do-good-deeds-i’ll-send-my-son-to-die-for-you faker !

  23. How sad to see that there are so few Christians who will come to the table on this. The moon is indeed a light in the night sky. How it derives that light is not the issue.

The sun is self light, the moon is reflected light…so what…they both give off light in the sky.

From this perspective the Biblical account is correct.

Bill did not make his hands or his feet. He doesn’t make his own heart beat. All of these are perfectly suited to their tasks.

Most researchers of DNA admit that there is intelligent design evidence in the strands of DNA that they study. The Human Genome Project, an attempt to draft a rough map of the human genome, was concluded and the details of the “genetic information,” which highlighted how superior God’s creation of living beings is, have been revealed to mankind. Today, everyone who considers the results of this project and finds out that a single human cell contains enough information to be stored in thousands of encyclopaedia pages, grasps what a great miracle of creation this is.

The first verse of the first chapter of the first book of the Bible says, In the beginning, God–not chaos, not some nebulous cloud of gases–created the heavens and the earthº (Genesis 1:1). And a few verses later, “God created man in His own image; He created him in the image of God; He created them male and female” (Genesis 1:27). God formed man out of what? Previous life forms? Apes? Beasts? “And God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul” (Genesis 2:7). This is the truth of God’s Word!

God created this wonderful world for you to live in and enjoy, and He is the only One who can give meaning to the universe and purpose to the planets and love to our hearts and peace to our minds and health to our bodies and rest to our spirits and happiness to our lives and joy to our souls.

  24. Blind me with science notes:

What’s silly is that Bill Nye takes a cheap shot a scripture.

Just imagine a situation where somebody gave a talk on families in the U.S. and said “you know I support all kinds of family structure as long as kids are cared for, but remember only a man and a woman can produce a child”.

I liked Nye years ago but he seems to be morphing into an angry SOB.

In 50 years Nye’s science will look as foolish as his view of scripture.

    Figures lie and lairs figure.

  25. Jeez, Dave…quoting scripture to prove your god exists is like claiming you’re rich because you wrote “$1,000,000″ in your bank book…

  26. on one hand you have a religious text with inaccuracies (which personally if i believed in it would begin to doubt because if there is one inaccuracy there is possibly many). on the other you have people arguing the existence of god by quoting pieces of this text. “Hey, unicorns exist because… see back there where i said unicorns exist. yup.”

  27. Now, I don’t normally post in these sorts of forums, but, Dave’s post simply sickens me. Firstly, he points out that there is indeed a contradiction in the scripture, saying that man was created first, which would go on to say that he would create woman to serve man.
Then, it’s stated that they were created together. But that’s another kettle of fish, so to speak. The part that really angers me is the fact that he says He is the only one that can make us love, happy, and healthy. Dave is essentially dooming billions of people to a life of sad, lonely, sickness because they can never learn of one small minority’s invisible sky man.
That’s one of the main reasons I no longer subscribe to the Christian faith. They claim to be all about love and tolerance and understanding, then they (For the most part) say how others will go to eternal suffering because a being of infinite love and knowing said they should.

  28. And, mostly because I just noticed this. This post was started over a year ago. Or at least the original post was. It must have just made its way into Stumble Upon or something.

  29. Umberto expresses:

So who’s bright idea was it to send Bill Nye, the “Science Guy” to Waco, “bastion of religious zealots?” That’s like sending Reagan to Moscow in ‘87 to talk about capitalism. Good job there, Bill’s agent. hope you’re still employed.

  30. lord carpetdope retorts:

What god would create a world and fill it with religious vomit from texas? Now thats a personal best! you people feed on human misery, what god would want you as his faithfull? if there was a god,he’d snuff all of you out like a lucky butt.your mental illness is not a basis for a belief system, let alone a lifestyle choice. but, hay, the other stuff, i just love your work. really. the things that you “do”.WOW! great stuff.

  31. Waco Texas, the place doesn’t exactly scream academic merit does it now?

  32. All is futile, wait for the rebirth of the new sun, the great concilliator will save us all. Not that we deserve it he’s just like that. No prayer needed. A s regards to the post that says we are wasting time , tohose reading this don’yt have the ability to do anything useful and should probably be elimanated from the gene pool.

  33. Just a note:
    .
All the sound and fury generated, for and against the original premise, seems to me to be a futile attempt to prove the non-provable. This be human nature, I guess. This never shall be resolved.

  34. “Most researchers of DNA admit that there is intelligent design evidence in the strands of DNA that they study.”

Yup. Just like most red-headed people prefer beans to cauliflower. It’s a well-known fact.

  35. @ dave - “Most researchers of DNA admit that there is intelligent design evidence in the strands of DNA …”

Utter rubbish. The vast majority of scientists do not believe in gods and therefore reject creationism … and the percentage who reject the idea of gods increases in biological / evolutionary scientists. http://www.americanscientist.org/template/AssetDetail/assetid/55593

Aren’t *facts* just so inconvenient some times?

Let’s consider this fact for a moment.

Scientists (i.e. those with a detailed understanding of how the world is bolted together) are more likely to reject the ludicrous story told in the bible than ‘ordinary’ people (i.e. those with little or no education in astronomy, chemistry, biology, evolution, physics, etc.).

It therefore seems likely that if people spent a bit of time educating themselves, they’d be far more likely to reject the superstitious nonsense that religion actually is.

So, get off your knees, stop praying to an imaginary sky fairy and go read some science books. You’ll feel good for doing it.

However, if you don’t to go to the trouble of that, consider this: the god you believe in is entirely dependent on where and when you were born. Greece 3000 years ago - you believe in Zeus. Denmark 2000 years ago - you believe in Odin. India today - you believe in Ganesh. Hicksville, USA today - you believe in Yahweh. And each of you certain that your god is the right one.

“We are all atheists about most of the gods that have ever been invented. Some of us just go one god further.”

  36. All these people heard in their puny heads was, “Your God is wrong.” It’s scary that they can vote.

I’d love to share “Bill Nye the Science Guy” with my daughters, but unfortunately, it’s only available from Disney for more than $3,000. If you’d like to see that show on TV again, please sign the Bring Back “Bill Nye the Science Guy” petition.

  38. Dale Edwards mentions:

What’s with this Bill Nye has gotten radical in his older age stuff? And how is pointing out the truth a “cheap shot at scripture.” The problem is, many, not all, christians look at scripture as the truth. Nye was just setting the record straight. It’s not HIS (Nye’s) fault that so many Christians can’t accept the truth. Nye is a scientist. Is it wrong for a scientist to object when religion tries to explain science with superstition? It is not. It is his duty.
    So he’s not being ‘radical.’

  39. Dale Edwards remarks:

“Most researchers of DNA admit that there is intelligent design evidence in the strands of DNA that they study.”

No, they don’t. You’re full of it. 93% of scientists are atheist. 7% is far from ‘most.’

  40. G. L. Jones responds:

God, Allah, Buddha, Zeus, Bugs Bunny, Santa Claus–they are All the same thing: fantasy designed to further the originator’s personal agenda.

  48. Kreation is a myth expresses:

Some of the people posting in this blog are so clever… proving the existence of a creator with excerpts from the bible… so clever. And the pure genius of pointing out that Kelleys analogy of god swearing on the bible wasn’t factually correct (based on what the bible says)….. amazing. Although I am pretty sure this person was being facetious when she said it, to stop her short and say “Hey, the bible says that god wouldnt have to swear on the bible”, is just sooo smart. And for all the other people that scan these blogs looking for grammatical errors or any other thing that they can drudge up an argument for, how’s about we remember that this is an online forum, not an english class. Typo’s happen.

With that said, I would like to point out that I am not an atheist. I am more of an agnostic. I am open to the idea of religion, I just haven’t met one that convinced me. This is mostly because of how rediculous the people following these religions sound when they try to defend them. Notice that no atheist gets insane with rage when someone says there is a god. When its the other way around though not too many religionists can have a normal debate about this. Once you get too close to disproving whatever evidence they come up with, they dont want to play anymore. This is what happens when a persons belief system comes crashing down around them. They get defensive. I am almost sure that the leaders of these religions have already figured out that they are chasing a dream, a hope. God fearing priests would not be raping little boys. Also, followers of a “righteous” and “just” god would not go on crusades to kill the people that did not believe in their fairytale.

In closing, I will say this. If there is a god, GREAT! But i will not be one to follow a group of people just like me into whatever depths of hell (real or imagined) in the name of a god they cannot begin to comprehend. All of the religions today are lead by men. There is no god at the vatican. Only a man who has much “education” in the teachings of the church. Imagine his regret if he dies and does not find any god to welcome him. A life lived in a myth. They claim to have the backing of gods and yet they want your money. What a surprise.

If there is a god then come save us from ourselves. Please?

My only question is that if the complexity of the human DNA is to complex for adaptation to of generated from base components, by what magic was it created from dirt? By either account humanity was generated by unimaginably sophisticated comic forces, but I have a good deal of trouble understanding where to find textbooks that support this force was capable of cognitive thought. I am sure that this is only a product of my ignorance, because all forms of science follow the scientific method. I mean reason would state that at the moment of the universes infancy an uncomprehendingly complex and infallible being would have simply existed… God had to have made everything through divinity; It is ignorant to think that DNA could have been the product of adaptive changes and probability.

The woman was ignorant! The bible DOES NOT SAY THAT!!!!.

I am a religious jew and there are many places were it talks about how the moon reflects the light of the sun! It says so in the Talmud even. I talks about how the sun is the giver and the moon the receiver, and relates it to things like, for example, charity.

There is a fable (also from the Talmud) about the 2 great lights yes, and how the moon complained how can you have to kings for one throne, and as a result god reduced the moon. Scientifically you could say the sun used to be a binary star.

It really sucks how some Christians give religion a bad name with such STUPID and IGNORANT beliefs!

  58. Texas Jewboy observes:

I really don’t understand American Christians. We Jews have ALWAYS been taught that the Torah (the first 5 boos of The Bible AKA The Books of Moses) was to be read for it’s SYMBOLIC meanings rather than it’s LITERAL meanings.
We Jews have had to write the Torah EXACTLY the same, line by line, for thousands of years.. none of this translation and that translation crap.

To paraphrase Lewis Black.. you can talk all you want about the New Testament.. that’s YOUR book.. but don’t tell US what OUR book means.. it’s ours and you can’t steal it to fit your needs.

  59. MyTruthBeDone reflects:

I had to add my two cents. Emperor Constantine let us down so long ago with his Edict of Milan. Anyone know what this is? This allowed the formation of the Council of Nicea. The council was a congregation of christian scholars who knew the stories of the disciples and christianity the best, and all of them got together to argue for weeks for what went and what stayed. Their wonderful achievement (and curse of mankind) was the Bible.

Your contradictions in the bible come from stories being shuffled for years upon years upon years from person to person by word of mouth only to be landed on paper (after prieviously mentioned arguing). Its better to imagine a typical arguement between a couple where both think they are right regardless of the fact neither one actually thought about what they were fighting over. The important thing is that one of them is wrong and one is right in both of their eyes.

Just a side note: Constantine was finally baptized on his death bed in what most educated historians believe to be against his will as all of Constantines actions were in response to his mother being a christian.

Religion is bunk. Want proof? Dont like science? How about history? Lets bring the squeky clean record of the Catholic church. Inquistion? Inquistion anyone? The wonderful idea of Hell, your tail and pitchfork, cooked up in the 1500’s to bring a declining membership back to the church. Paying for forgiveness. The fact that more people have died in the name of this sad little idea that so many take so seriously than in all wars combined. The pope blessing the roman coliseum every year to settle all the dead folks who faced the lions (despite the fact the roman records show that the number of christians that died in the arena could be counted on one hand.) I can go on believe me.

People buy the bible because of fear. Its quick, its simple, and it explains everything under one appalling pretense, “God did it”. Religion breed ignorance by design, it was its purpose from its very creation and it remains so today. Hate, segragation, and the destruction of free thinkers which posed so much threat to the early church at a time when they ruled the world.

Such a beautiful message ruined in the hands of man, and of modern day believers who seek to reinvent the past today. The world would be a sad dark place if religious leaders took over, if the zealots had their way. To do anything nowadays in the name of god is almost a sin, as believers seek to use the bible as a way to make the world more comfortable for them and their fear filled lives.

Time to wake up, quit sending your children to bible schools to fill their head full of shit they cant understand but will vehemently hold on too and live by because their parents said it was right. Zombies.

Santa and the Bible go hand in hand. The only difference is no one tells those poor kids the Bible is false too when they turn eight.

Happy thoughts folks, ignorance breeds as we can clearly see.

  62. So how exactly is a jewish zombie who is his own father any more ridiculous than the Flying Spaghetti Monster? Is it because your little book (which was written by ancient civilizations that believed the sun and everything else revolved around the earth) told you it was so?

  63. Waco (Whacko) is just 15 miles from Crawford, the home of President Bush. The dumb and the blind are right neighborly in those parts.

I’m sorry to paint everyone in that part of the Bible Belt with the same brush. There are of course a lot of intelligent people living in Waco too, but they have to keep their knowledge to themselves (if they know what’s good for them).

Evolution (natural selection) is a theory, just like gravity. It has been “proven” to the same extent as gravity has been. Creationism (Intelligent Design) is no more than a hypothesis, and a weak one at that.

To teach creationism in any science curriculum, beyond a five-second mention along with other myths and superstitions in a section that talks about impediments to legitimate scientific progress through the ages, is an absurd and wasteful usage of our country’s time and resources.

You can show the effects of it but you cant prove it!!!! You want to teach your “theory of evolution” but not our creationism you want to take the word of another meathead “Darwin” born Feb 12, 1809 over a book that is 2000 years old and the creation story goes back further than that. As Christians we walk by faith not by sight. We cant convince you to believe. The only thing we can do is hold up the truth of Jesus Christ once the Gospel has been preached to you it is up to you what you do with. God is not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance. The Bible also says that the Gospel of Jesus Christ is foolishness to the unbeliever, but to those who believe it is the power of God unto Salvation.

Just as it is idiotic to assume that saying the moon reflects the sun’s light contradicts the Genesis creation account, so it is foolish to assume that such an attitude reflects all, most, a significant number of, or even anything other than a tiny minority of Christian fundamentalists, Republicans, or even Texas residents. In fact, it wouldn’t surprise if it turned out the hecklers or whatever they were were atheists planted to try to make Christians look like fools. I don’t know of any Christian, whether fundamentalist, evangelical, Catholic, Protestant, Mormon, Jehovah’s Witness, Seventh-day Adventist, or of any other stripe who denies that the moon reflects light from the sun.

  72. there is no god. so everybody just cool out.
